Membrane Characterization

World-Class Test Laboratory

The GES Membrane Characterization Facility was created to rapidly and accurately measure critical membrane physical properties for quality control and screening of new materials. Chief amongst these are conductivity, gas permeability, water uptake isotherms, mechanical properties and electroosmotic drag coefficient. Numerous custom devices have been designed and built to ascertain these properties over the possible drive cycle conditions of an automotive fuel cell engine. Accordingly we can monitor these properties over the entire matrix of –40 to 140°C temperature and 0% to 100% RH.

For example, one of our AC impedance instruments is capable of automatically characterizing five membrane samples over a full set of operating conditions in one day, a task that used to take months using older laboratory methods.

In brief, GES provides contract and consulting services to membrane developers to support emerging novel technologies.
